Diya’s Story
Diya came to Luvin Arms in July 2026 alongside her companion, Riya, following a rescue coordinated in partnership with Long Island Humane. Their journey to Colorado required considerable planning, with transportation delayed by weather conditions, concerns about highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI), and staffing logistics. When arrangements were finally in place, two Luvin Arms team members traveled to New Jersey to bring Diya and Riya to their permanent home at the sanctuary.
Bringing Diya and Riya to Luvin Arms required careful attention to their health and safety, especially given ongoing concerns about avian influenza. Their arrival also meant ensuring they had an appropriate environment where they could settle in, receive individualized care, and stay together. For social animals like turkeys, familiar relationships can be an important part of their well-being, and keeping Diya and Riya together was meaningful during their transition.
Today, Diya has a lifelong home at Luvin Arms, where she can explore her surroundings, develop relationships, and experience the daily routines of sanctuary life alongside Riya and her fellow turkey residents. Like every individual at the sanctuary, Diya has her own preferences, personality, and needs that we continue to learn about as we get to know her. Here, she is recognized not for what humans might expect from a turkey, but for who she is.
