Story:
Lola, along with 11 other potbellied pigs, was saved from a dire animal cruelty situation in Jacksonville, FL. Luvin Arms stepped up to provide a permanent home for five of them and facilitate the safe relocation of another four to a sanctuary in Texas.
Upon arrival, our veterinary team performed a standard ultrasound on Lola to check for pregnancy, as this is a common practice for rescued females living alongside male pigs. Surprisingly, the results revealed that Lola was expecting. Given the difficulty in determining the precise gestation stage through ultrasound and the unknown conception date, we prepared for the anticipated birth.
As Lola began to show clear signs of labor, we moved her to the medical barn to ensure a warm, comfortable space for her to deliver. We installed a camera to monitor her, especially during the night, for delivery signs. True to our preparations, Lola gave birth to her piglets under darkness.
On a peaceful Saturday evening, October 21, 2023, eight adorable piglets were born, making this event a joyous one under the observant eyes of our Manager of Resident Care, who, through the camera system, quickly coordinated with our care team to assist.
By the time the team arrived, Lola had successfully delivered all eight piglets. The team immediately cared for the newborns and their incredible mother, ensuring their health and comfort in their new surroundings.
Unfortunately, we lost one of the piglets, a sweet girl named Eclipse. She was born with a condition that shortened her brief but impactful life.
Lola and her seven flourishing piglets bring immense joy to Luvin Arms. Observing their growth, emerging personalities, and explorations is a source of daily happiness. Supporting Lola in her motherhood is an honor. Witnessing this remarkable family’s growth is a constant reminder of the beauty and resilience of life at our sanctuary.
