With a heavy collective heart, we said our final goodbyes to our beloved Soma the turkey on May 17th. Please read her inspiring story below, and share your own memories of Soma in the comments section.
Soma and her friends, Pearl and Jade, were rescued from a backyard turkey operation in 2018 when they were just six months old. They were living in a barn with many other turkeys in terrible conditions. The barn was dark and so dirty, they were walking around in their own feces. The turkeys were going to be sold to be eaten on Thanksgiving Day, but thankfully, these three girls were surrendered to a community member who wanted to give them a chance at life. The threesome came to call Luvin Arms their forever home in October 2020.
Soma and Pearl were a bonded pair, and they loved spending all their time together, snacking on greens and enjoying foot baths. We will all miss Soma, but Pearl will miss her dear friend most of all.
Here are some sweet love notes for Soma from her caregivers:
“We’ll miss you, Soma! You and your sister, Pearl, were so cute together, and loved each other so much. You loved special snacks and scratch, and your sweet little sounds were so cute. We’ll take good care of your sissy. You will forever be in our hearts.” – Cassie Baurick, Animal Caregiver
“Soma and Pearl were just obsessed with each other, they were so bonded! Soma would always be first to get snacks, and come up and see what was going on in the hallway. Pearl would always be close behind her, making sure it was safe. My heart is breaking for Pearl right now. I know that Soma lived a good long life here, and got to know a life full of snacks and love… even if she wasn’t ever thrilled about people. So much love to her as she rests easy.” -Jolene Wells, Director of Resident Care
“Sweet Soma: I’m going to miss you so much. I’m so sorry you felt so sick, but I’m glad Pearl was with you until the end. You will always be her best friend and sister. I will miss feeding you snacks in the morning in a little bowl, and you walking over all happy to eat the scratch. I will miss seeing you walking all around your backyard with Pearl, and sleeping on your perch together every night. Even on your last few days here, you made it up there to be with her despite not feeling well. You will be missed not only by Pearl, but by your boyfriend, Walter. He loved to walk by your door and admire how beautiful you were. You were so beautiful, Soma! We’ll look after Pearl for you. I will love you forever.” – Madeline Schefke, Resident Care Manager
