Devi the rescued dairy cow is our Resident of the Month in May. To celebrate mothers everywhere, please consider sponsoring our beautiful Mama Devi.
Devi’s story is quite extraordinary. At first glance, her story may not seem exceptional at all. But when you peel back the veil of the dairy industry, you will understand the significance of Devi’s life at Luvin Arms.
DEVI BECOMES A YOUNG MOTHER
Devi was moved from one ranch to another during the COVID-19 pandemic, and ended up with a rancher who planned to use her as a dairy cow.
Like all mammals, cows need to produce children in order to produce milk.
A compassionate soul from the Colorado Jain Indian community rescued Devi from the ranch, unaware that Devi was already pregnant. At the time of her rescue, Devi was less than two years old. This was far too young to be pregnant because Devi’s body was not fully developed.
Devi rested at a farmhouse in Aurora, CO, during her pregnancy. On December 10th, 2021, Devi gave birth to a beautiful baby girl, Laxmi. Devi and her baby came to Luvin Arms just a few days later.
What’s in a Name: Devi and her child are named after powerful feminine goddesses from the Hindu tradition. Their names are quite fitting given their gift of opening minds and hearts about the plight of dairy cows on Sanctuary tours.
AN EXTRAORDINARY LIFE TOGETHER
Devi and Laxmi’s relationship represents something very special in this world.
In the dairy industry, most babies are taken away from their mothers on their first day of life, and many never get to drink any of their mother’s milk. Laxmi is one of the very few calves in this world who gets every drop of her mama’s milk.
DEVI AND LAXMI BECOME AMBASSADORS FOR THEIR SPECIES
Also unlike the majority of dairy cows, Devi and her daughter get to spend the rest of their days growing old together in peace.
We tell their story to all who visit the Sanctuary, in service of those individuals who suffer in the dairy industry.
Your one-time or monthly gift of sponsorship for beautiful Mama Devi would help provide her nutritious food, soft bedding, and any necessary medical care, all things she so deserves to live a full and happy life at Luvin Arms.
