Monika has been an educator at the middle and high school levels along Colorado’s Front Range for more than 18 years. Her approach to education is rooted in mindfulness, vulnerability, and the creation of space for authentic learning and creativity. She strives to support the whole student by balancing academic, social, and emotional growth, values that also shape how she approaches her involvement with Luvin Arms.
Monika became involved with Luvin Arms out of a desire to help others better understand the connection between humans and other animals, as well as the realities of factory farming and animal exploitation. She is passionate about encouraging people to expand their circle of compassion to include not only humans and companion animals but also farmed animals. Whether someone takes a small step or makes a significant change, Monika believes each of us has the ability to help create a more compassionate world for all beings.
Over the years, Monika has contributed to Luvin Arms in many ways, including helping plan and implement the sanctuary’s book talk series, volunteering in animal care, and contributing to strategic planning. She deeply values the Luvin Arms community and is grateful to the many residents and others who have changed her life in powerful, positive ways.
Horses have held a special place in Monika’s heart since childhood. She once dreamed of becoming a jockey until she learned about the harmful practices in the horse racing industry. Today, that childhood love has evolved into advocacy for horses and their right to live free from exploitation and harm. One of her most cherished sanctuary memories is a quiet afternoon spent with Niblet. Finding him lying in the sunshine, Monika settled beside him, rested her head against his neck, and read to him for more than an hour as he eventually fell asleep. She considers it an honor to call Niblet her friend and treasures the opportunity to simply spend time in his company.
Outside of Luvin Arms, Monika is a mountain bike racer with the Petunia Mafia team and a multimedia artist. She has participated in Boulder Open Studios for the past ten years, has been featured in juried exhibitions and other shows throughout the Front Range, and currently displays her work at Rembrandt Yard in Boulder. Across her work as an educator, artist, advocate, and sanctuary volunteer, Monika is guided by a desire to cultivate deeper connection, compassion, and respect for the beings with whom we share the world.
